Instructional Handbook

English IV Teacher Guide

Deliver, differentiate, assess, and document a senior course built around independent literacy, advanced analysis, consequential communication, capstone inquiry, and postsecondary transfer.

Recommended weekly rhythm

  1. Monday: context, vocabulary, complexity preview, reading or research plan.
  2. Tuesday: advanced close reading, evidence matrix, source evaluation, counterreading.
  3. Wednesday: senior composition, research, craft, or production studio.
  4. Thursday: seminar, conference, intellectual-fairness check, and substantive revision.
  5. Friday: unfamiliar transfer task, quiz, corrections, portfolio reflection, and next-step decision.

Instructional time and credit

Plan approximately 150–180 documented hours for one full high-school credit unless the student’s jurisdiction or program requires another measure. Record direct instruction, supervised workshop, seminar, assessment, research, presentation, and qualifying independent reading according to local rules.

Assessment model

  • Weekly quizzes: 25%
  • Unit assessments: 25%
  • Major projects and portfolio products: 25%
  • Midterm: 10%
  • Final: 15%

Automatically scored questions are mastery checks, not substitutes for teacher-scored analysis, research, narrative, oral communication, capstone work, and portfolio evidence.

Advanced senior expectations

  • Independent reading at the upper end of secondary complexity
  • Nuanced theses, qualified claims, counterinterpretations, and limitations
  • Literary, rhetorical, visual, quantitative, and cross-text evidence
  • Multiple sources and competing scholarly or public interpretations
  • Sustained research, academic integrity, transparent authorship, and responsible technology use
  • Long-form reading, timed writing, seminar leadership, accessible publication, capstone, and oral defense

Mastery and retakes

The portal retains best quiz and assessment scores. Require corrections and targeted review before a retake. Preserve the original attempt, correction reasoning, revised work, and best score so progress is visible rather than erased.
