Compare What Matters

Close reading, context checks, student-owned analysis, and purposeful review of skills from previous weeks.

Day 26 · Context audit; Week 5 · Fate, choice and heroic consequence

1 · Recall

Recall one meaningful difference between Gilgamesh and Odysseus that matters to cultural context.

2 · Apply

Compare two studied narratives using power, duty, limits and transformation, citing consulted episodes rather than relying on a thematic label alone.

3 · Reflect

What did your 'so what?' reasoning reveal that surface similarity did not?

Revisit: Week 4 cultural meaning · Week 5 epic heroes.

Day 2 · Original short-short story

The River Promise

One tale said the river demanded tribute; another claimed it rewarded careful observation. A student noticed that both warned travelers not to underestimate natural forces.

Literary evidence question: Write a theme that accounts for shared meaning.

Cite two details and preserve your response in existing coursework.

Day 27Comparative criteriaRL.9-10.2W.9-10.9

Compare What Matters

Today’s Question: What makes a comparison analytical instead of merely observational?

Power

Who may act, command, refuse, or rule—and at what cost?

Duty

What obligations bind the character to family, guest, ruler, community, deity, or future?

Limits

What can humans control, and what remains beyond control?

Transformation

What changes, what resists change, and why does that matter?

Learning Target

I can choose a meaningful criterion and organize evidence from two texts around that shared question.

I Do · Surface vs. Analytical Comparison

Surface: both heroes travel. Analytical: both journeys test responsibility, but one text measures responsibility through changing kingship while another repeatedly tests identity, hospitality, and return. The second claim gives the comparison a criterion and preserves difference.

We Do · Evidence Matrix

Practice with Gilgamesh and Odysseus using four rows: cultural expectation, hero’s capacity, limit/failure, consequence. In each row, add a final column: So what does the difference reveal?

You Do

Create your own four-row matrix for the pair you plan to use in the Unit 2 essay. Each row must contain evidence from both texts and one sentence of comparative reasoning.

Language Lab · Comparison Signals

Use signals precisely: similarly, whereas, by contrast, unlike, both, although, while, in each text, however. Do not use “on the other hand” when the relationship is not actually contrastive.

Day 27 · Evidence and Reasoning Check

Five formative questions. Four correct (80%) unlocks direct access to the next lesson, without grading your independent writing.

Four-Criterion Evidence Matrix

Work from the original reading; write your own explanation, preview it, then decide whether to add it to the saved daily response.

Save Day 27 Evidence

Formative practice and evidence preparation do not automatically grade the Unit 02 essay.
