Week 2 · Evidence and quotation integration; Week 5 · Epic interpretation; Days 26–28 · Context, matrix and synthesis

1 · Recall

Recall why a comparative essay works more strongly when organized by criteria than by independent plot summaries.

2 · Apply

Build a point-by-point plan using sourced passages from your assigned pair. Draft the original 700–900-word essay yourself before using PROSE for revision.

3 · Reflect

Which source needs stronger evidence, and which interpretation needs qualification?

Revisit: Week 4 cultural meaning · Week 5 epic heroes.

Day 4 · Original short-short story

The Other Ending

The first version ended when the monster was defeated. A later version ended when the villagers learned why it had approached their homes.

Literary evidence question: Explain how changing an ending changes a theme.

Cite two details and preserve your response in existing coursework.

Build the Unit Essay

Today’s Question: How do I organize a comparison around ideas rather than around one text at a time?

Learning Target

I can plan and draft a comparative literary analysis in which each body section develops one shared criterion using both texts.

Assessment Pair

Default: use The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Odyssey from the assigned course reading/edition. A teacher may approve another Unit 2 pair if both texts have sufficient evidence and context. Identify the edition or translation when quoting exact wording.

Body Architecture · Point-by-Point
  1. Introduction: context + comparative thesis.
  2. Criterion 1: Text A + Text B + synthesis.
  3. Criterion 2: Text A + Text B + synthesis.
  4. Criterion 3: complication, limit, or meaningful difference.
  5. Conclusion: what the comparison reveals without claiming false universality.
Required Draft

Write 700–900 words. Use precise evidence from both texts, at least three moments of explicit synthesis, and a source/translation note. Integrate quotations when your assigned copy is available; paraphrase accurately when exact wording is not necessary.

Revision Pass

Highlight each paragraph in three categories: evidence from A, evidence from B, comparative reasoning. Any paragraph containing only one category is incomplete. Then check parallel structure and comparison signals.

Day 29 · Evidence and Reasoning Check

Five formative questions. Four correct (80%) unlocks direct access to the next lesson, without grading your independent writing.
