Today’s Question: Can I explain how the ear is being guided and make deliberate formal choices of my own?
Independent Transfer Poem · The Workshop Clock
The wall clock clicks above the drill,
small teeth of sound against the room.
A file slides slow along the steel;
bright dust settles beside the broom.
At noon the motor coughs, then clears.
The benches ring, then ring again.
A worker stops. The silence steers
our eyes toward one unfinished chain.
No bell. No speech. The second hand
keeps crossing what we understand.
Part A · Independent Analysis · 350–500 Words
Develop a literary claim answering: How do sound and form create expectation or emphasis in “The Workshop Clock”? Analyze at least two different formal/sound features. One must involve rhythm, rhyme, line movement, stanza structure, pause, or a structural turn—not simply a repeated consonant.
Part B · Formal Poem
Submit the revised poem begun on Day 54. Aim for 12–24 lines unless your chosen form reasonably requires another length. Include the rule set or form description.
Part C · Structure Evidence
Annotate at least four meaningful choices: sound pattern, approximate stress/meter, rhyme relationship, caesura/enjambment, stanza break, syntax/inversion, refrain, or volta. Explain the effect beside each annotation.
Part D · Craft Explanation · 160–220 Words
Explain what the form made you expect, one place you fulfilled that expectation, one place you changed or broke it, and the strongest revision you made after reading aloud.
Revision Path
A score below 8/10 does not erase the work. Revise the lowest-scoring row, attach a correction note, and resubmit. Mastery stays at 80%; support targets the specific weakness.
