Graphs of Tangent, Cotangent, Secant & Cosecant

Tangent and cotangent have vertical asymptotes and no amplitude. Secant and cosecant are reciprocal graphs with branches outside |y|≥1.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the central structure of graphs of tangent, cotangent, secant & cosecant using precise mathematical language.
  • Apply the governing relationship and verify results with an alternate representation or substitution.
  • State domain, unit, precision, and context restrictions whenever they affect the result.
  • Analyze a misconception and communicate a correction with evidence.

Essential question: How do angle measure, the unit circle, graphs, and periodic functions model rotation, waves, cycles, and repeated behavior?

Governing relationship

tan period π; sec and csc inherit zeros/asymptotes from cosine and sine.

Tangent and cotangent have vertical asymptotes and no amplitude. Secant and cosecant are reciprocal graphs with branches outside |y|≥1.

Worked examples

Read each example, close it, and reconstruct the reasoning independently. Then verify by substitution, graph, table, or alternate method.

Where is tan x undefined?At x=π/2+kπ.
What is the range of sec x?(−∞,−1]∪[1,∞).

Reasoning workshop · Reciprocal graphs and vertical asymptotes

Study the governing rule, follow every step, and verify the conclusion before attempting independent work.

Investigation A · Locate tangent's asymptotes and checkpoints.

  1. tanx=sinx/cosx, so x=π/2+kπ makes its denominator zero.
  2. Between −π/2 and π/2, tan(−π/4)=−1, tan0=0 and tan(π/4)=1.
  3. The branches repeat after π rather than 2π.

Verification: Tangent is unbounded near asymptotes and has no amplitude.

Investigation B · Explain the range of secant.

  1. secx=1/cosx and is undefined when cosx=0.
  2. For defined inputs, |cosx|≤1 implies |secx|≥1.
  3. sec0=1 and secπ=−1; values strictly between −1 and 1 cannot occur.

Verification: The range is (−∞,−1]∪[1,∞), while its period is 2π.

Independent transfer · check after solving

Complete these without the game or answer key first. Give exact values where possible and show a short verification.

  1. Locate cotangent's asymptotes and zeros.
  2. Give the range of cosecant.
  3. Evaluate tan(3π/4) and tan(7π/4).
Reveal independent answer reasoning
  1. Asymptotes x=kπ; zeros x=π/2+kπ.
  2. (−∞,−1]∪[1,∞).
  3. Both tangent values are −1.

Misconception to correct: Do not assign amplitude to tangent: unlike sine and cosine, tangent's branches have no finite high or low value.

Compare your solution to the verified reasoning, correct one mistaken step, and then use optional game practice. Official grading stays separate.

Guided and independent practice

  1. Sketch tangent over one period.
  2. Locate secant asymptotes.
  3. Compare reciprocal graph features.
  4. Create one original example involving graphs of tangent, cotangent, secant & cosecant and solve it completely.
  5. Use the Khaemenes Scientific Calculator to verify one result, then document the setup and reasonableness check.
  6. Write a one-paragraph explanation connecting symbolic, graphical, numerical, and contextual representations.

Differentiated pathways

Foundation

Review prerequisite vocabulary, annotate each worked step, complete the first four prompts, and use a table or graph to support symbolic work.

Core

Complete every prompt, explain domain and verification, correct errors, and submit the applied task with clear mathematical communication.

Extended

Generalize the relationship, compare methods, use technology strategically, analyze sensitivity, and create a proof, counterexample, or advanced model.

Application laboratory

Select the trig family that fits a periodic process with asymptotic behavior.

Required evidence: defined quantities and units; at least two representations; transparent calculations; verification; one limitation; and a defensible conclusion.

Misconception and correction

Common misconception: Assigning amplitude to tangent.

Write the first invalid step, the governing rule that corrects it, and one counterexample or verification that demonstrates the correction.

Mastery evidence

  • Accurate symbolic work with preserved equivalence.
  • Correct domain, interval, unit, and precision statements.
  • At least one independent verification.
  • A correction explaining why an incorrect approach fails.
  • A clear application conclusion that distinguishes mathematical result from recommendation.
