Safety and evidence boundary
Use the course safety charter. This instructional studio uses supplied or invented numerical examples, paper tasks, and simulations. Do not culture microorganisms or substitute unsupervised laboratory materials. Model data are not experimental findings.
Explicit science instruction
A hazard is a possible source of harm; risk concerns the likelihood and severity of harm under particular conditions. Before any work, identify hazards, consult the course safety charter, and substitute provided data or simulations wherever materials, facilities, or qualified supervision are missing. In biological modeling, a controlled comparison changes one planned factor while keeping other important conditions similar. A model may illustrate a principle without demonstrating it experimentally in real organisms.
Vocabulary: hazard; risk; control variable; simulation; provenance.
Worked example with reasoning
Imagine comparing two sets of printed plant-growth data. Both sets cover seven days, but one was recorded in millimeters and the other in centimeters. Converting 2.4 cm to 24 mm is necessary before comparison. Treating 2.4 as smaller than 16 without units would reverse the observed relationship. The correct practice is to standardize units, label the source of every dataset, and declare which conditions were not controlled.
Guided question
Classify a missing unit label as a documentation problem and unsupervised culturing as a safety hazard. What safe substitute preserves the question being explored?
Independent work
- Describe an independent variable, dependent variable, and three controls for a simulated plant-growth comparison.
- Write a safety decision tree that redirects uncertain material use to a supplied-data investigation.
- Annotate a four-row mock dataset with units, measurement source, possible bias, and needed corrections.
Misconception check
A controlled comparison does not mean all conditions are known, nor does a simulation substitute for empirical verification.
Formative understanding check
Why should a simulation be described as a simulation in a science portfolio?
Show the worked response
It produces evidence about a model under chosen assumptions, not direct experimental evidence from living organisms or physical materials.
Self-check only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.
Mentor evidence conference
Ask Archaemenes to challenge your hazard-versus-risk classification, control choices, and whether your observation records are sufficient to support the claim.
Archaemenes may question your reasoning and help you plan a correction, but does not determine mastery or provide protected assessment answers.
Open Archaemenes for this lessonTeacher guidance
Reinforce no unsupervised biological culturing or use of unknown samples. A printed dataset is sufficient to practice analysis and revision.
Foundation: sort examples into hazard, risk, variable, and control. Core: write a safe controlled comparison with transparent records. Extended: identify a confounder, uncertainty source, and design revision that would reduce it.
Preserve learning evidence
Record calculations, model revisions, CER writing, and a correction in the original tuesday evidence field. The course's existing records and progression rules remain in control.
