Safety and evidence boundary
Use only teacher-approved plant investigations. If supervision, materials, lighting, or solutions are not explicitly approved, use the supplied fictional datasets or a simulation. Do not improvise chemical treatments or sealed-organism experiments.
Explicit science instruction
Photosynthesis contains linked reaction systems. In the light reactions, pigments absorb photons and initiate electron transfer in thylakoid membranes. Water is oxidized, releasing electrons, hydrogen ions, and oxygen. Electron-transfer processes help generate ATP and the reduced carrier NADPH.
ATP and NADPH then support carbon fixation in the stroma. The Calvin-cycle pathway incorporates CO₂ into organic intermediates and uses energy and reducing power to build carbohydrate precursors. The cycle does not directly produce one glucose molecule in a single turn.
The label “dark reactions” can be misleading. Carbon fixation does not require photons directly at every step, but it depends on products and regulation linked to light reactions, so it is not best understood as a pathway that simply runs only at night.
Vocabulary: photon; chlorophyll; electron transfer; ATP; NADPH; carbon fixation; Calvin cycle; redox; coupled process.
Worked example with reasoning
Suppose a leaf receives strong light but CO₂ becomes extremely limited. Light-driven reactions may still capture energy for a time, but carbon fixation cannot continue at the same rate because the pathway lacks sufficient carbon substrate. Conversely, abundant CO₂ cannot maintain high photosynthetic output in complete darkness because ATP and NADPH production from the light reactions is not sustained. The two systems are coupled.
Guided question
Why is it incomplete to say “the light reactions make sugar”? Identify what they actually provide and where carbon enters the process.
Independent work
- Make a two-column comparison of light reactions and carbon fixation.
- Trace the roles of water, O₂, CO₂, ATP, and NADPH.
- Explain why “light-independent” does not mean “unaffected by light conditions.”
- Identify one place where a simple chloroplast diagram hides important complexity.
Misconception check
The Calvin cycle is not literally a “night-only” reaction set, and oxygen released by photosynthesis does not come directly from CO₂. Isotope evidence showed that released O₂ originates from water.
Formative understanding check
What do the light reactions provide that carbon fixation uses?
Show the worked response
They generate ATP and reducing power in NADPH through light-driven electron-transfer processes. Carbon fixation uses those products to support incorporation and reduction of carbon from CO₂.

Mentor evidence conference
Ask Archaemenes to test whether your explanation keeps matter, energy, observation, and mechanism separate. The mentor may challenge your reasoning but may not supply protected assessment answers or determine mastery.
Open Archaemenes for this lessonTeacher guidance
Foundation: use a flow diagram showing light → ATP/NADPH and CO₂ → organic carbon. Core: require compartment, inputs, outputs, and coupling. Extended: discuss redox logic and why pathway regulation makes the simple “light vs dark” split misleading.
