Safety and evidence boundary
This week uses atom-tracing models, fictional reaction sets, and supplied ecosystem data. No specimen collection, chemical reaction, or biological culture is required.
Explicit science instruction
Balanced chemical equations are material-accounting models. They show that the number of each type of atom is equal on both sides of the equation. In biology, net equations summarize many enzyme-mediated steps and should not be mistaken for mechanisms.
For example, the net aerobic respiration model C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O conserves 6 carbon atoms, 12 hydrogen atoms, and 18 oxygen atoms on each side. The equation does not show glycolysis, electron carriers, ATP synthase, or every intermediate.
Atom accounting can reveal impossible models. If a proposed reaction creates carbon atoms on the product side that were absent from the reactants, the material model is incomplete or incorrect.
Vocabulary: coefficient; subscript; reactant; product; stoichiometry; atom accounting; conservation; net reaction.
Worked example with reasoning
Count oxygen atoms in the respiration model. Reactants: glucose contributes 6 O atoms and 6O₂ contributes 12, for 18 total. Products: 6CO₂ contributes 12 and 6H₂O contributes 6, also 18 total. Changing a coefficient changes the number of molecules; changing a subscript changes the identity of a substance.
Guided question
Why can you change a coefficient to balance a model but not change the subscript in CO₂ to CO₃ just to make the atom count work?
Independent work
- Verify carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen counts in the net respiration equation.
- Compare the photosynthesis and respiration net models.
- Identify which terms describe matter and which statement must be added separately for energy.
- Explain one reason a balanced equation is not enough to prove a biological mechanism.
Misconception check
A balanced equation does not prove that a reaction occurs in one step, nor does reversing the written equation prove that the biological pathways are exact reverses. Stoichiometric equivalence and mechanistic equivalence are different claims.
Formative understanding check
What does a balanced biological net equation guarantee?
Show the worked response
It guarantees atom conservation within the represented reaction model. It does not by itself establish pathway steps, reaction rates, enzymes, energy transfer details, or cellular location.
Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.
Mentor evidence conference
Ask Archaemenes to inspect your atom or system model for a missing reservoir, an impossible disappearance of matter, or confusion between matter cycling and energy flow. Revise your own work after the conference.
Open Archaemenes for this lessonTeacher guidance
Foundation: use colored atom tokens. Core: require complete atom counts and model limitation. Extended: compare net equations with pathway diagrams and explain why multiple internal reactions can sum to one net equation.
Preserve learning evidence
Keep the atom accounting, system model, correction notes, and explanation from this lesson in the corresponding Week 11 evidence field.
