Safety and privacy boundary
Use fictional organisms, chromosome cards, beads, paper models, or teacher-approved simulations. Do not require family genetic histories, fertility information, ancestry testing, reproductive information, medical records, or personal genetic data. Human worth is never ranked by chromosome combinations or genetic variation.
Explicit science instruction
At metaphase I, each homologous pair can orient toward either pole independently of many other pairs. In a simplified model with n homologous pairs and two possible orientations per pair, the number of chromosome combinations from independent assortment is 2n.
This count describes combinations of whole parental chromosomes and ignores crossing over, mutation, linkage complications, and unequal segregation. It is therefore a lower-bound style model of possible genetic variation, not a count of every possible gamete genotype.
Vocabulary: independent assortment; random orientation; chromosome combination; probability; 2n; linkage; model assumption.
Worked example with reasoning
For n = 3 homologous pairs, independent assortment gives 2³ = 8 whole-chromosome combinations. For n = 5, 2⁵ = 32. The model assumes each pair has two orientation outcomes and treats pair orientations as independent.
Guided question
Why does 2n underestimate total possible genetic variation when crossing over occurs?
Independent work
- Calculate whole-chromosome combinations for n = 2, 4, 6, and 10.
- Explain the exponent in biological terms.
- Use a three-pair card model to generate at least eight gamete combinations.
- State two assumptions of the 2n model.
- Explain why probability does not guarantee every combination appears in a small sample.
Misconception check
Independent assortment does not mean every gene assort independently. Genes on the same chromosome can be linked; recombination can separate some linked alleles depending on distance and crossover events.
Formative understanding check
If a species has n = 7, how many whole-chromosome combinations are possible from independent assortment alone in the simplified model?
Show the worked response
2⁷ = 128 combinations.

Foundation: use an exponent table and physical orientation cards. Core: calculate combinations and defend the assumptions behind 2^n. Extended: compare whole-chromosome assortment with linked-gene recombination and explain why the model is not a full genotype count.
