Safety, privacy and evidence boundary
Use fictional organisms, coins/cards, and published-style datasets. Do not require personal family histories, ancestry testing, fertility information, medical pedigrees, or personal genetic data. Trait inheritance never ranks human worth.
Explicit science instruction
A strong genetics student asks whether a simple model's assumptions fit the system. Mendelian monohybrid models work best when one locus has a clear genotype–phenotype mapping, alleles segregate normally, transmission and survival are not strongly biased, and environmental effects do not obscure the categories.
More complex inheritance can involve linkage, multiple loci, gene interaction, variable penetrance, environmental influence, mitochondrial inheritance, or developmental effects.
Worked example with reasoning
A fictional trait fits 3:1 in large controlled crosses but not in one small class set. Sampling is a plausible explanation. A second trait repeatedly shows a 1:2:1 phenotype ratio because heterozygotes are distinct; segregation still works but complete-dominance mapping does not.
Guided question
What evidence would tell you to expand a Mendelian model rather than merely blame random sampling?
Independent work
- Write a CER answering the Week 20 essential question.
- Use one segregation model, one probability calculation, and one observed-vs-expected comparison.
- Name three assumptions.
- Give two cases requiring a richer model.
Spiral retrieval bridge
Try these from memory before reopening earlier lessons. Then check your reasoning and record one correction if needed.
- From Week 19: explain why meiosis, not mitosis, is the chromosome behavior behind Mendel's segregation model.
- From Week 15: compare chromosome-number maintenance in mitosis with reduction in meiosis.
- Calculate the expected aa proportion in Aa × Aa, then explain why four offspring need not contain exactly one aa.
- Correct this statement: “A dominant allele is more common and stronger.”
Retrieval is formative. The goal is durable connection across units, not a separate grade.
Misconception check
Simple models are not “wrong” because they have limits; they are useful when assumptions are explicit and tested.
Formative understanding check
What is the scientific value of stating model assumptions?
Worked response
Assumptions define when predictions are expected to hold and make failures informative rather than mysterious.
Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.
Mentor evidence conference
Ask Archaemenes to challenge your probability, evidence classification, model assumptions, and limitations. The mentor does not infer personal genetics or provide protected assessment answers.
Open ArchaemenesTeacher guidance
Foundation: use an assumption checklist. Core: defend when a Mendelian model is appropriate. Extended: compare alternative models and specify evidence that would distinguish them.
Preserve learning evidence
Keep models, calculations, corrections, and limitations in the matching Week 20 evidence field.
