Complex-Trait Synthesis

Explain phenotype as an outcome of interacting genetic, environmental and developmental systems.

Safety, privacy and evidence boundary

Use fictional organisms and de-identified/public datasets. Do not infer intelligence, personality, worth, disease, ancestry, race, or family traits from genetics. Complex-trait models are population-level scientific tools, not labels for individuals.

Explicit science instruction

Complex traits require layered models: multiple loci can contribute, genes can interact, one gene can affect multiple traits, expression can vary, and environments can modify effects. Development and chance add further variation.

The scientific goal is not to abandon genetic models but to use models matched to the question and evidence while avoiding deterministic overclaiming.

Worked example with reasoning

A fictional trait shows polygenic inheritance, different reaction norms, and incomplete penetrance. A one-gene Punnett square is inadequate, but probability, distributions, and controlled comparisons remain useful tools.

Guided question

What evidence would justify moving from a single-locus model to a complex-trait model?

Independent work

  1. Write a CER answering the essential question.
  2. Use a distribution, penetrance calculation, and reaction norm.
  3. State three limits of personal prediction.
  4. Correct one deterministic statement.

Spiral retrieval bridge

Try these from memory before reopening earlier lessons. Then check your reasoning and record one correction if needed.

  1. From Week 20: name one assumption that makes a single-locus Mendelian model useful.
  2. From Week 8: how can cells with nearly identical genomes develop different phenotypes?
  3. Sketch what crossing reaction-norm lines would mean for genotype effects across environments.
  4. Correct this statement: “If a trait is heritable, environment does not matter.”

Retrieval is formative. The goal is durable connection across units, not a separate grade.

Misconception check

“Genetic” and “environmental” are not mutually exclusive categories for many traits.

Formative understanding check

Why can identical genotypes show different phenotypes?

Worked response

Environment, regulation, development, chance, and measurement context can change expression.

Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.

Mentor evidence conference

Ask Archaemenes to challenge the model, quantitative reasoning, and limits without inferring personal genetic or medical information.

Open Archaemenes

Teacher guidance

Foundation: use a model-layer organizer. Core: integrate multiple evidence types. Extended: compare causal, predictive, and mechanistic claims and rank their evidence needs.

Preserve learning evidence

Keep the model, data interpretation, correction note, and limitation in the matching Week 22 evidence field.
