Safety, privacy and evidence boundary
Use paper/digital molecular models and fictional DNA sequences. No biological samples, genetic testing, ancestry inference, or personal genomic data are required. Molecular models are representations and should not be treated as photographs of atoms.
Explicit science instruction
Before cell division, DNA is copied by a coordinated replication system. Helicase-like activities separate strands; primase supplies starting points; DNA polymerases extend new DNA using complementary templates; ligases join discontinuities. Replication is semiconservative: each product duplex contains one old and one new strand.
DNA polymerases synthesize in the 5′→3′ direction, so antiparallel templates create different continuous/discontinuous synthesis patterns.
Worked example with reasoning
Start with parental strands P1 and P2. After replication, duplex A contains P1 + new complement N1; duplex B contains P2 + new complement N2. The two daughter duplexes preserve sequence information by templated complementarity.
Guided question
Why does antiparallel DNA create different synthesis geometry on the two templates?
Independent work
- Draw a replication fork.
- Label old/new strands.
- Mark 5′ and 3′ ends.
- Explain leading versus discontinuous synthesis conceptually.
- State one simplification of the diagram.
Misconception check
DNA polymerase does not copy an entire chromosome in one uninterrupted pass from one end to the other; replication begins at origins and uses coordinated machinery.
Formative understanding check
What does semiconservative mean?
Worked response
Each replicated DNA duplex contains one parental strand and one newly synthesized complementary strand.

Open ArchaemenesTeacher guidance
Foundation: use a two-color old/new strand model. Core: explain directionality and semiconservative outcome. Extended: compare bacterial and eukaryotic origin strategies at a conceptual level.
