KHAEMENES ACADEMY · BIOLOGY 10 · WEEK 23 · DAY 05

DNA Replication Synthesis

Integrate structure, complementarity, directionality and repair into one evidence-based copying model.

Safety, privacy and evidence boundary

Use paper/digital molecular models and fictional DNA sequences. No biological samples, genetic testing, ancestry inference, or personal genomic data are required. Molecular models are representations and should not be treated as photographs of atoms.

Explicit science instruction

DNA's structure supports copying because each strand constrains a complement, but fidelity depends on enzymes, directionality, origins, proofreading, and repair. The double helix is therefore necessary context, not a self-executing copying machine.

Worked example with reasoning

A sequence-composition problem identifies complementarity; a fork model explains synthesis direction; old/new strand labeling demonstrates semiconservative replication; an error-rate model explains why copying is highly accurate but not perfect.

Guided question

What features of DNA structure enable faithful copying, and what additional cellular machinery is required?

Independent work

  1. Write a CER answering Week 23's essential question.
  2. Use one complement example, one directionality diagram, and one fidelity calculation.
  3. State three limitations of a simple fork diagram.

Spiral retrieval bridge

Try these from memory before reopening earlier lessons. Then check your reasoning and record one correction if needed.

  1. From Week 3: identify the monomer type that makes DNA and one structural feature of that monomer.
  2. From Week 19: how does DNA replication before meiosis change chromatid number without immediately changing chromosome number?
  3. If A=28% in double-stranded DNA, calculate T, G, and C under the pairing model.
  4. Correct this statement: “DNA replication is perfect because complementary base pairing prevents all errors.”

Retrieval is formative. The goal is durable connection across units, not a separate grade.

Misconception check

Structure alone does not “cause” replication; enzymes and cellular energy/processes are essential.

Formative understanding check

What is the strongest link between base pairing and replication fidelity?

Worked response

Each template base constrains which complementary base can pair, providing information for polymerase-guided copying.

Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.

Mentor evidence conference

Ask Archaemenes to challenge the model, quantitative reasoning, and limits without inferring personal genetic or medical information.

Open Archaemenes

Teacher guidance

Foundation: use a concept map scaffold. Core: integrate molecular structure and process. Extended: evaluate which evidence supports structure, mechanism, and fidelity as separate claims.

Preserve learning evidence

Keep the model, data interpretation, correction note, and limitation in the matching Week 23 evidence field.
