Safety, privacy and evidence boundary
Use fictional DNA/RNA/protein sequences and standard codon tables. Do not use personal genomic data or infer disease from sequence examples. Sequence exercises are educational models, not clinical interpretation.
Explicit science instruction
The central information-flow model DNA→RNA→protein is useful for many genes, but biology also includes noncoding RNAs, RNA genomes, reverse transcription, RNA editing, protein modification, and regulation at every step. Models should capture the dominant logic without pretending exceptions do not exist.
Worked example with reasoning
A fictional DNA change alters a splice site. The coding codon at that exact base may not be translated, yet mature RNA composition and protein sequence can still change. This shows why sequence-to-phenotype reasoning must include processing.
Guided question
What does the DNA→RNA→protein model explain well, and what does it omit?
Independent work
- Write a CER answering Week 24's essential question.
- Trace one fictional gene through transcription, processing and translation.
- Include one sequence-change outcome and two model limits.
Spiral retrieval bridge
Try these from memory before reopening earlier lessons. Then check your reasoning and record one correction if needed.
- From Week 23: write the complementary strand to 5′-AGTC-3′ in its own 5′→3′ direction.
- From Week 8: connect differential gene expression to the transcription/translation pathway.
- Translate one short mRNA codon sequence and identify where reading-frame choice matters.
- Correct this statement: “Every DNA mutation changes an amino acid.”
Retrieval is formative. The goal is durable connection across units, not a separate grade.
Misconception check
Genes do not act as isolated “blueprints” that directly build traits; expression, regulation, cellular networks, environment and development intervene.
Formative understanding check
What is the strongest reason the genetic code links RNA sequence to protein sequence?
Worked response
Ribosomes and tRNAs interpret codons according to a biochemical mapping between codons and amino acids.
Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.
Mentor evidence conference
Ask Archaemenes to challenge your information-flow model, sequence reasoning, data interpretation, and limitations.
Open ArchaemenesTeacher guidance
Foundation: use an information-flow organizer. Core: integrate all three stages. Extended: compare protein-coding and noncoding gene products and regulatory exceptions.
Preserve learning evidence
Keep sequence work, models, corrections, and limitations in the matching Week 24 evidence field.
