Safety, privacy and evidence boundary
Use fictional regulatory networks and de-identified expression datasets. Epigenetic examples are not permission to infer trauma, disease, behavior, or inheritance in individuals. Avoid deterministic or transgenerational claims not supported by evidence.
Explicit science instruction
DNA is packaged with histone proteins into chromatin. Chemical modifications of histones and DNA, nucleosome positioning, and chromatin-remodeling complexes can influence accessibility and transcription. These are often called epigenetic mechanisms when they alter gene activity without changing the DNA sequence.
Some marks are stable across cell divisions; others are dynamic. Evidence for inheritance across organismal generations varies by mechanism and species.
Worked example with reasoning
Two fictional cell types share the same gene sequence. In Cell A, the promoter region is accessible and transcription factor binding is high; in Cell B, compact chromatin reduces access. Expression differs without a DNA sequence difference.
Guided question
Why should “epigenetic” not be translated as “environment permanently rewrites heredity”?
Independent work
- Compare open and compact chromatin models.
- Separate DNA sequence from chromatin state.
- Explain mitotic stability versus transgenerational inheritance.
- Evaluate one exaggerated epigenetic claim.
Misconception check
Epigenetic marks are not always permanent, environmentally caused, beneficial, or inherited across generations.
Formative understanding check
Can gene expression change without a DNA-sequence mutation?
Worked response
Yes. Regulatory proteins, chromatin accessibility, RNA processing and signaling can change expression.
Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.
