Safety, privacy and evidence boundary
Use fictional regulatory networks and de-identified expression datasets. Epigenetic examples are not permission to infer trauma, disease, behavior, or inheritance in individuals. Avoid deterministic or transgenerational claims not supported by evidence.
Explicit science instruction
Cell types can share nearly the same DNA sequence while expressing different gene sets through transcription factors, regulatory DNA, chromatin states, signaling, RNA processing and feedback. Regulation is dynamic enough for responses yet stable enough to maintain cell identity.
Worked example with reasoning
A fictional liver-like cell and neuron-like cell share Gene Q. Different enhancers, transcription factors and chromatin states produce distinct expression. A signal later changes expression within one cell type without changing identity completely.
Guided question
How can regulatory systems be both stable and responsive?
Independent work
- Write a CER answering Week 25's essential question.
- Use one promoter/enhancer model, one chromatin example, and one expression calculation.
- Correct one epigenetic overclaim.
Spiral retrieval bridge
Try these from memory before reopening earlier lessons. Then check your reasoning and record one correction if needed.
- From Week 24: distinguish promoter DNA from the RNA codons that are translated.
- From Week 13: how can an external signal alter gene expression without changing DNA sequence?
- If expression rises from 25 to 100 normalized units, calculate fold change and log2 fold change.
- Correct this statement: “Epigenetic means an environmentally caused permanent mutation.”
Retrieval is formative. The goal is durable connection across units, not a separate grade.
Misconception check
Different cell types usually do not have completely different genomes; differentiation primarily reflects regulated gene expression plus some specialized exceptions.
Formative understanding check
What three layers can regulate expression without changing coding sequence?
Worked response
Examples include transcription-factor binding, chromatin accessibility, and RNA processing.
Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.
Mentor evidence conference
Ask Archaemenes to challenge your information-flow model, sequence reasoning, data interpretation, and limitations.
Open ArchaemenesTeacher guidance
Foundation: use a three-layer regulator map. Core: integrate molecular mechanisms with data. Extended: compare stability, feedback and environmental response across cell states.
Preserve learning evidence
Keep sequence work, models, corrections, and limitations in the matching Week 25 evidence field.
