KHAEMENES ACADEMY · BIOLOGY 10 · WEEK 27 · DAY 01

Fossils, Stratigraphy & Time

Classify what fossils and rock context directly show versus what scientists infer about biological history.

Safety, privacy and evidence boundary

Use published fossil images, maps, anatomical diagrams and fictional/public molecular datasets. Distinguish direct observations from historical inference. Represent scientific models accurately while keeping philosophical or theological claims separate from empirical claims; no student belief is graded.

Explicit science instruction

Fossils preserve physical traces of past organisms. Their position in stratigraphic sequences, associated minerals, sedimentary context and radiometric dates can constrain age and environment. Relative dating establishes order; numerical dating estimates time with measured uncertainty.

Fossils rarely identify direct parent–offspring ancestry. Scientists infer relationships by comparing characters, ages and branching models.

Vocabulary: fossil; stratigraphy; relative age; numerical age; index fossil; radiometric dating; uncertainty; inference.

Worked example with reasoning

Layer B lies above A and below C in an undisturbed sequence, so B is younger than A and older than C. A volcanic ash bed within B is dated 12.4 ± 0.2 million years, providing a numerical constraint for fossils near it.

Guided question

Why is “older than” a different claim from “12.4 million years old”?

Independent work

  1. Order a five-layer sequence.
  2. Use one dated ash bed to bracket fossil age.
  3. Separate specimen observations from ancestry inference.
  4. State two sources of uncertainty.

Misconception check

A fossil's age and morphology do not by themselves prove it is a direct ancestor of a later species.

Formative understanding check

What does superposition provide in an undisturbed sequence?

Worked response

A relative ordering in which lower layers are generally older than overlying layers.

Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.

Mentor evidence conference

Ask Archaemenes to challenge your evidence classification, model assumptions, quantitative reasoning, and ethical boundaries.

Open Archaemenes

Teacher guidance

Foundation: use a layer diagram. Core: combine relative and numerical evidence. Extended: evaluate reworking, unconformities and date uncertainty.

Preserve learning evidence

Keep models, calculations, source notes, corrections, and limitations in the matching Week 27 evidence field.
