Safety and evidence boundary
Use paper-token simulations and published or fictional trait-frequency data. Do not intentionally expose organisms to harmful agents or breed animals for class. Avoid purpose-based language: populations change through differential reproduction, not because organisms need or want traits.
Explicit science instruction
Strong selection evidence combines measured variation, heritability, differential reproductive success and repeated population change. Field observations, experiments, genomic data and time series can contribute different evidence.
Observed evolutionary change does not require purpose; selection sorts existing/new heritable variation through differential reproduction.
Worked example with reasoning
Across five fictional populations exposed to the same environmental shift, trait T rises from ~20% to ~65%, while matched control populations remain near 20%. Parent–offspring data show heritability and T carriers leave more offspring. Convergence strengthens a selection explanation.
Guided question
Which evidence in the example is most diagnostic of natural selection rather than drift?
Independent work
- Write a Week 29 CER.
- Use one distribution graph and one fitness calculation.
- Address drift/gene flow alternatives.
- Correct purpose-based language.
Spiral retrieval bridge
Try these from memory before reopening earlier lessons. Then check your reasoning and record one correction if needed.
- From Week 28: distinguish drift, gene flow, mutation, and selection in one sentence each.
- From Week 22: how can environment alter the fitness effect of a heritable trait?
- A phenotype rises from 20% to 50% across generations. Calculate the percentage-point change and relative percent increase.
- Correct this statement: “Organisms mutate because they need to adapt.”
Retrieval is formative. The goal is durable connection across units, not a separate grade.
Misconception check
Selection is not a conscious process and does not generate needed mutations on demand.
Formative understanding check
What three evidence categories make a selection claim strong?
Worked response
Heritable variation, differential reproductive contribution, and repeated population change consistent with those differences.
Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.
Mentor evidence conference
Ask Archaemenes to challenge whether your population-level claim follows from the data and whether alternative evolutionary mechanisms remain possible.
Open ArchaemenesTeacher guidance
Foundation: use an evidence checklist. Core: integrate quantitative and mechanistic evidence. Extended: rank alternative evolutionary mechanisms by plausibility from a multi-population dataset.
Preserve learning evidence
Keep calculations, graphs, models, corrections and limitations in the matching Week 29 evidence field.
