Safety and evidence boundary
Use supplied character matrices, public fossil/sequence data, and fictional taxa. No personal belief is graded. Scientific common-ancestry and phylogenetic models must be explained accurately; theological or philosophical claims may be discussed respectfully but are not interchangeable with empirical models unless they generate testable evidence.
Explicit science instruction
A character matrix records states across taxa. Shared derived characters can support clades. Parsimony favors trees requiring fewer character-state changes, but real phylogenetics also uses probabilistic models and large molecular datasets.
Character independence, homology, convergence and reversals affect inference.
Worked example with reasoning
Taxa A,B share derived character 1; B,C share character 2; A,B also share two additional derived states. A parsimonious tree may group A+B if that arrangement requires fewer independent origins overall. The full matrix—not one favored character—must be scored.
Guided question
Why can convergence mislead a character-based tree?
Independent work
- Score a four-taxon matrix.
- Propose two trees.
- Count changes for each.
- Choose the more parsimonious tree under stated assumptions.
- Identify one homoplasy.
Misconception check
Parsimony is not a law that nature always follows the fewest evolutionary changes; it is an inference method with assumptions.
Formative understanding check
What is homoplasy?
Worked response
A similar character state arising independently or by reversal rather than simple shared inheritance.
Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.

Foundation: use a three-character matrix. Core: score competing trees. Extended: compare parsimony with likelihood conceptually and discuss character weighting.
