Energy-Pyramid Data Investigation

Use real-style productivity data to construct and critique an energy pyramid.

Safety and evidence boundary

Use supplied ecological datasets, safe non-contact observation, and paper/digital food-web models. Do not disturb wildlife or reveal sensitive species locations. Energy-flow models are ecosystem approximations and should include units, area/time scales, and uncertainty.

Explicit science instruction

An energy pyramid should specify energy per area per time, not merely organism counts. Collect or use supplied productivity values, order trophic positions from documented feeding evidence, and calculate transfer efficiencies. Uncertainty in diet assignment and measurement should be recorded.

Worked example with reasoning

Dataset: producers 18,500; herbivores 2,220; primary carnivores 244; top consumers 31 kJ m⁻² yr⁻¹. Efficiencies are 12.0%, 11.0%, and 12.7% approximately. The pattern is similar but not identical across transfers.

Guided question

Why can organism numbers increase at a higher trophic level even while energy decreases?

Independent work

  1. Construct a scaled energy pyramid.
  2. Calculate each efficiency.
  3. Write one explanation for variation.
  4. State two data limitations.

Misconception check

Numbers pyramids and energy pyramids are not interchangeable; a single large producer can support many small consumers.

Formative understanding check

What makes an energy pyramid always upright under ordinary definitions?

Worked response

Energy available for production decreases through transfers because organisms use and dissipate energy.

Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.

Mentor evidence conference

Ask Archaemenes to challenge your model topology, evidence classification, calculation, and stated uncertainty without substituting belief or protected answers for science mastery.

Teacher guidance

Foundation: use a preformatted table. Core: calculate and graph with units. Extended: propagate measurement uncertainty conceptually and compare pyramid types.

Preserve learning evidence

Keep models, data work, corrections, source classifications, and limitations in the matching Week 31 evidence field.
