KHAEMENES ACADEMY · BIOLOGY 10 · WEEK 34 · DAY 03

Resilience, Thresholds & Restoration

Evaluate restoration as an adaptive evidence-based process rather than a promise to recreate one exact historical state.

Safety, ethics and evidence boundary

Use public/de-identified conservation datasets and safe non-contact observation. Protect sensitive species locations and community privacy. Conservation choices involve ecological evidence plus rights, costs, access, and community values; science informs consequences but does not erase civic or ethical tradeoffs.

Explicit science instruction

Resistance is limited change during disturbance; recovery is return or reorganization afterward; resilience is capacity to absorb disturbance while retaining key functions/identity. Ecosystems can cross thresholds into alternative states.

Restoration sets reference conditions and measurable indicators, then monitors and revises interventions.

Worked example with reasoning

A wetland restoration raises water table and native-plant cover, but invasive cover also rises. The project improves two indicators while worsening another. Adaptive management would revise methods rather than label the whole project success/failure from one metric.

Guided question

Why does restoration need multiple indicators and a revision rule?

Independent work

  1. Choose a reference condition.
  2. Select four measurable indicators.
  3. Define a monitoring timeline.
  4. Write a trigger for revising the plan.
  5. State one threshold risk.

Misconception check

Resilience does not mean returning to exactly the same species composition after every disturbance.

Formative understanding check

What is adaptive management?

Worked response

Implementing a plan as a testable intervention, monitoring outcomes, and revising actions based on evidence.

Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.

Mentor evidence conference

Ask Archaemenes to challenge the evidence, stakeholder assumptions, quantitative model, tradeoffs, and revision criteria.

Open Archaemenes

Teacher guidance

Foundation: use an indicator checklist. Core: build a measurable restoration plan. Extended: compare reference-state and future-resilience goals under climate change.

Preserve learning evidence

Keep data, design choices, corrections, stakeholder reasoning, and uncertainty in the matching Week 34 evidence field.
