Model-Evidence Card Investigation

Evaluate competing atomic models against a set of synthetic evidence cards.

Safety and evidence boundary

Use supplied paper or digital evidence cards and approved simulations. This lesson does not authorize improvised physical procedures.

Explicit science instruction

Each evidence card represents a measured pattern such as beam deflection, line emission, or particle scattering. Test each model against each observation rather than choosing a model from memory.

Mark evidence as explained, unexplained, or ambiguous. A stronger model explains more independent evidence with fewer special exceptions while retaining stated limits.

A model can be useful and still incomplete. Rutherford’s model explains concentrated nuclear charge but does not by itself explain discrete electronic energy levels.

Vocabulary: evidence matrix; independent evidence; prediction; model limitation; comparison.

Worked example with reasoning

Model A has diffuse positive charge; Model B has a compact positive nucleus. Evidence card: a tiny fraction of positive projectiles scatter backward. Model B explains this more naturally because a close approach can produce strong localized repulsion.

Guided question

For electron-beam deflection, rare backscattering, and discrete line spectra, identify which historical model each most directly challenges.

Independent work

  1. Build a matrix with three models as columns and four evidence cards as rows.
  2. For each cell, write explained / not explained / ambiguous plus one reason.
  3. Choose the best-supported model and state one limitation.

Investigation / Data Lab

Preserve the raw card classifications, your reasons, uncertainty, and one revision after comparing the models.

Misconception check

The model with the most detail is not automatically best; explanatory fit and prediction matter.

Formative understanding check

Can one successful prediction prove every part of a model is literally true?

Reveal worked response

No. A successful prediction increases confidence within the model’s scope.

Public self-check only.

Mentor evidence conference

Ask Archaemenes to act as a skeptical reviewer and identify one evidence card your preferred model explains poorly.

Archaemenes may challenge reasoning and help plan corrections, but does not grant official mastery.

Teacher guidance

Foundation: Complete the evidence matrix with sentence starters.

Core: Justify every matrix decision and identify a limitation.

Extended: Propose a new evidence card that would discriminate between two tied models.
