Explicit science instruction
A structure–property model should be tested against data rather than accepted from a label. This investigation compares supplied melting behavior, conductivity by state, solubility observations, and mechanical descriptions.
Classifications can be probabilistic because some materials show mixed bonding or unusual behavior. Record mismatches rather than forcing every row into a single category.
The strongest conclusion names the property pattern, connects it to particle mobility or electrostatic structure, and states where the dataset is insufficient.
Vocabulary: property dataset; conductivity; melting point; classification; structure–property evidence.
Worked example with reasoning
Material X has high melting point, no solid conductivity, strong conductivity when molten, and brittle behavior. Those observations are consistent with an ionic-lattice model, though they do not prove a unique microscopic structure by themselves.
Guided question
Which two properties would most strongly distinguish an ionic solid from a metallic solid in a supplied comparison table?
Independent work
- Classify four anonymous materials using the supplied property table.
- Cite at least three properties for each classification.
- Identify one ambiguous sample and propose an additional measurement.
- Revise one classification if new evidence conflicts with the first model.
Investigation / Data Lab
Preserve the raw property table, classification rules, evidence citations, uncertainty, and one revision.
Misconception check
One property alone rarely identifies bonding type uniquely; use converging evidence.
Formative understanding check
Why is molten-state conductivity particularly informative for an ionic model?
Reveal response
It tests whether charged particles become mobile when the lattice is disrupted.
Public self-check only.
Mentor evidence conference
Ask Archaemenes to challenge your particle, charge, and evidence reasoning before you finalize the week record.
Teacher guidance
Foundation: Use a property-to-model organizer.
Core: Classify materials from multiple evidence streams and defend uncertainty.
Extended: Compare competing structure models for an ambiguous sample and propose a discriminating measurement.
