Where Did the Gas Go?

Learn to account for matter inside and outside the defined weighing boundary. No chemicals are required.

Safety and model limitations

The fictional initial apparatus and contents have a mass of 120.0 g. The gas-amount slider chooses a hypothetical portion of matter redistributed as gas. In closed accounting, all gas stays within the modeled boundary; in open accounting, that mass leaves the region measured on the balance. All matter is still counted when outside gas is included. The model ignores uncertainty, spillage, gas remaining dissolved and air-flow effects.

1. Choose one variable

Starting total: 120.0 g

Measured inside boundary: 120.0 g

Gas outside boundary: 0.0 g

Accounted total: 120.0 g

2. Compare model records

Compare two trials with the same initial conditions and gas amount but different boundaries. Explain precisely what the scale counts in each one.

3. Explain, question and correct

Extended question: If a real balance has an uncertainty of ±0.2 g, could you confidently distinguish a 0.1 g difference? Explain.
