Catalysts & Energy Profiles

Explain how catalysts change pathway and activation energy without changing overall thermodynamic endpoints.

Safety boundary

Use energy-profile diagrams, supplied datasets, and approved simulations only. No catalyst/reaction demonstrations are required.

Explicit chemistry instruction

A catalyst provides an alternative pathway with lower activation-energy barriers.

Catalysts speed forward and reverse approaches to equilibrium but do not change the equilibrium constant or overall reaction energy difference.

Catalysts are regenerated within the mechanism and are not consumed stoichiometrically overall.

Vocabulary: catalyst; activation energy; alternate pathway; energy profile; regeneration.

Worked example

On an energy diagram, a catalyzed pathway has lower peaks but the same reactant and product energy levels as the uncatalyzed path.

Guided question

Which parts of an energy profile change when a catalyst is introduced, and which remain fixed?

Independent work

  1. Compare catalyzed/uncatalyzed profiles.
  2. Identify activation barriers.
  3. Explain why overall ΔE is unchanged.

Misconception check

A catalyst does not add energy to products or shift equilibrium in favor of products.

Formative check

What does a catalyst primarily change?

Reveal response

The reaction pathway and activation-energy barriers.

Mentor evidence conference

Ask Archaemenes to audit mechanism consistency, rate evidence, catalyst claims, and model limits.

Teacher guidance

Foundation: Use energy-profile diagrams.

Core: Compare multistep pathways.

Extended: Analyze catalyst participation and regeneration in a mechanism.
