KHAEMENES ACADEMY · CHEMISTRY 11 · WEEK 22 · DAY 02

Experimental Design & Controls

Design a kinetics test that isolates one variable and preserves reproducibility.

Safety boundary

Use supplied datasets and approved simulations. Any physical demonstration must be teacher-supervised and explicitly classroom-safe; no improvised reactive mixtures.

Explicit chemistry instruction

Change one target variable while holding relevant others constant.

Specify the observable used to estimate rate, the measurement interval, and how repeated trials will be handled.

A design should include a plan for uncertainty and data preservation before data collection.

Vocabulary: control; repeatability; measurement plan; uncertainty; reproducibility.

Worked example

To test temperature, keep concentration, volume, surface area, and measurement method fixed across trials.

Guided question

Which variables must be controlled to test only a concentration effect?

Independent work

  1. Draft a trial table.
  2. Identify controls.
  3. Define the rate metric.
  4. Plan repeated trials and uncertainty notes.

Misconception check

Multiple variables changing together weaken causal interpretation.

Formative check

What is the purpose of a control variable?

Reveal response

To reduce alternative explanations for the observed response.

Mentor evidence conference

Ask Archaemenes to audit controls, competing predictions, residuals, uncertainty, and whether the conclusion exceeds the evidence.

Teacher guidance

Foundation: Use a design checklist.

Core: Build a reproducible trial plan.

Extended: Analyze confounding and measurement limits.
