Buffer Simulation Investigation

Use simulation data to compare buffered and unbuffered responses to equal disturbances.

Safety boundary

Use buffer simulations and supplied datasets only. Do not use biological or medical dosing contexts or unsupervised chemical mixtures.

Explicit chemistry instruction

Apply the same modeled acid/base addition to pure water and one or more buffers.

Preserve initial pH, added amount, and final pH for every trial.

Compare ΔpH rather than relying only on final color or label.

Vocabulary: controlled comparison; ΔpH; capacity; disturbance; simulation.

Worked example

If water shifts 3.0 pH units and a buffer shifts 0.4 under the same modeled addition, the buffer shows stronger resistance.

Guided question

Why must the acid/base addition be held constant across samples?

Independent work

  1. Preserve raw initial/final pH data.
  2. Calculate ΔpH.
  3. Compare two buffer concentrations.
  4. Record uncertainty and one revision.

Investigation / Data Lab

Preserve initial/final pH, disturbance amount, ΔpH, comparison, uncertainty, and one revision.

Misconception check

Comparing unequal disturbances does not fairly test buffer performance.

Formative check

What response metric directly compares resistance?

Reveal response

The magnitude of ΔpH for the same disturbance.

Mentor evidence conference

Ask Archaemenes to audit conjugate-pair logic, equilibrium response, and whether capacity claims match the data.

Teacher guidance

Foundation: Use supplied simulation data.

Core: Run controlled comparisons.

Extended: Compare capacity across concentrations or ratios.
