25 Objective Questions · 20/25 Required · Two Constructed Responses
Unit 01 Assessment
Demonstrate independent objective mastery across the full inquiry-and-evidence sequence, then complete two human-scored constructed responses. Because 19/24 is 79.2%, the smallest whole-number score meeting the ≥80% course gate is 20/24 (83.3%).
Independent assessment: during an objective attempt, do not use Mentor, PROSE, answer keys, external search, or another person to generate answers. Correct answers and explanations appear only after submission. Constructed responses should also represent the student's own scientific reasoning under the assigned conditions.
Objective Result
Constructed Response 1 · Investigation Design
Scenario: Design a safe investigation of how drop height affects the mean bounce height of the same ball on the same surface.
Your response must include a testable question; preregistered directional prediction; independent/dependent variables; operational definitions for drop height and bounce height; at least five meaningful controls; at least five trials per height; instrument/resolution considerations; safety and stop conditions; raw-data table headings; graph choice with axes/units; anomaly/deviation handling; and two limitations with matched improvements.
Constructed Response 2 · Dataset Reasoning
A pendulum study reports mean periods of 0.90 s at 20 cm, 1.10 s at 30 cm, 1.28 s at 40 cm, 1.43 s at 50 cm, and 1.55 s at 60 cm.
Write a CER explanation that: (1) describes the numerical pattern and tested range, (2) makes a claim no broader than these data, (3) cites relevant values as evidence, (4) gives cautious scientific reasoning, (5) states one measurement/design limitation, (6) proposes one specific improvement, and (7) identifies one extrapolation the dataset does not justify.
Constructed-response rubric · 20 points each
| Criterion | Points | Full-credit evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Scientific task completion | 4 | Answers every required component accurately and directly |
| Evidence / design specificity | 4 | Uses concrete variables, measurements, values, controls, or data rather than generic statements |
| Reasoning | 4 | Connects evidence/design choices to scientific principles and study logic |
| Uncertainty / limitations | 4 | Names meaningful limitations, boundaries, alternatives, or uncertainty without vague “human error” |
| Communication & integrity | 4 | Clear, traceable, appropriately scoped response with no fabricated data or overclaiming |
Constructed-response mastery benchmark: 16/20 on each response when these are used as mastery evidence. Browser automation does not award these scores.
Mastery remains composite: passing the objective assessment does not by itself complete Unit 01. Required investigation/design evidence, constructed responses, and other unit requirements must also be complete. Human-scored responses must not be falsely marked by browser logic.
Correction protocol: after an objective attempt, review missed concepts and record original reasoning → why it failed → corrected principle → new example. A later failed retake must not erase a previously achieved passing best score.
