Decision Matrices & Tradeoffs

Use weighted evidence to compare competing designs while making assumptions visible.

Explicit engineering instruction

A decision matrix combines criterion scores with weights. The weights encode priorities, so they must be justified rather than treated as neutral facts.

Weighted score = Σ(score×weight). The result supports comparison but does not replace engineering judgment.

Sensitivity analysis asks whether the preferred design changes when reasonable weights or scores change.

Vocabulary: decision matrix; weight; score; tradeoff; sensitivity.

Worked example

Scores 8, 6, 9 with weights 0.4, 0.3, 0.3 give 7.7.

Guided question

How would increasing the weight on safety change a decision matrix?

Independent work

  1. Build a three-criterion matrix.
  2. Calculate weighted scores.
  3. Change one weight and test whether the winner changes.

Misconception check

A high weighted score does not erase a violated hard constraint.

Formative check

What should happen to a design that violates a non-negotiable constraint?

Reveal response

It should be rejected or revised even if its weighted score is high.

Mentor evidence conference

Ask Archaemenes to challenge criteria, weights, assumptions, and whether the evidence justifies the revision.

Teacher guidance

Foundation: Use a three-row matrix.

Core: Calculate and interpret weighted choices.

Extended: Perform sensitivity analysis.
