Revision Changes the Story

Original narrative curriculum, new interactive writing tools, connections to earlier learning, and learner-specific work records.

Checking learner record…

Connect · Apply · Reflect

Day 43 · Full independent Draft 1; Week 8 · Revision through information design

1 · Recall

Recall a moment in your story whose purpose is not yet clear or whose pressure seems underdeveloped.

2 · Apply

Diagnose purpose, structure, reader experience and language in that order; preserve the first draft and prepare three meaningful global revisions.

3 · Reflect

Which revision changes the reader's experience, rather than merely replacing words?

Review: Week 7 character and conflict · Week 8 point of view and pacing.

Day 44RevisionStyle

Revision Changes the Story

Today’s Question: What should a writer change before correcting commas?

Learning Target

I can revise globally for purpose, structure, character, and pacing before editing locally for style and conventions.

I Do · Four Revision Passes
  1. Purpose: What pressure/change is the story actually about? Remove or reshape events that compete with it.
  2. Structure: Is the decisive turn earned? Are scenes and summaries proportioned to importance?
  3. Experience: Where does the reader need action, dialogue, image, sensory evidence, or strategic withholding?
  4. Language: Only now refine sentences, dialogue punctuation, verbs, pronouns, repetition, and proofreading.
“Show, don’t tell” is a choice, not a commandment. Showing expands a moment. Telling can compress, orient, transition, or move quickly through lower-priority information. Revise based on narrative purpose.
We Do · Revision Diagnosis

Take the sentence “Jalen was terrified when he entered the basement.” Create one expanded version that shows fear through concrete evidence. Then identify a context where the concise original might actually be the better choice because the story needs to move quickly.

You Do · Global Revision
  1. Read Draft 1 without editing sentences.
  2. Write a one-paragraph diagnosis naming the weakest global dimension.
  3. Make at least three structural/craft revisions, not merely word substitutions.
  4. Then make a local conventions pass.
  5. Preserve Draft 1 and the revised version separately.
PROSE Window

Now move into PROSE. Preserve the original as U3 Narrative — Draft 1; revise; then preserve U3 Narrative — Revised. Keep a revision note identifying what changed and why.

Prove It

Choose your strongest revision and write: Before → After → Why this changes the reader’s experience.

Day 44 · Narrative Craft Check

Five formative questions; four correct (80%) reveals the next-lesson button. Practice never automatically grades the original story.

Four-Pass Revision Workshop

Compose each part independently; preview the full plan and choose whether to append it to the daily written response.

My Day 44 Written Evidence

Record your independent explanation, plan or reflection in this field; it remains separate from long-form story drafts.

Three Meaningful Global Revisions

Preserve the Day 43 original separately, then create the revised story and a before → after → why record.

Preserve Day 44 Progress

Prepared means saved and completed formative work, not independently graded writing.
