Your six annotations may include point of view, characterization, motivation, setting, internal/external conflict, scene/summary, pacing, dialogue/subtext, sensory detail, flashback/foreshadowing, suspense/irony, sentence rhythm, or another defensible craft decision. Do not force six different devices. Annotate choices that actually matter.
Craft Commentary Prompt
How did your most important narrative choices help the story become purposeful rather than merely eventful? Discuss at least three choices, quote or point to specific moments in your own story, and explain one meaningful revision between Draft 1 and final.
Final Read
Read the story aloud or use silent line-by-line tracking. Check speaker changes, dialogue punctuation, pronoun consistency, accidental tense shifts, repeated words, missing words, sentence boundaries, and paragraphing.
Mastery & Corrective Learning
8/10 = mastery. Below 8/10: identify the lowest rubric row, revise that exact dimension, explain the change, and resubmit. Do not start over unless the writer chooses to; correction targets the weakest craft decision while preserving the same standard.
Criterion
2 · Mastery
1 · Developing
Purpose & Arc
Character pressure, decisive turn, and aftermath create meaningful movement.
Events occur but central pressure/change is inconsistent or underdeveloped.
Character & Conflict
Motivation and conflict are revealed through specific narrative evidence and choices.
Character/conflict are present but rely heavily on explanation or remain thin.
Structure & Pacing
Scene, summary, sequencing, and emphasis are deliberately controlled.
Important and minor moments receive similar weight or transitions are unclear.
Language & Conventions
Dialogue/detail/sentence rhythm are purposeful; conventions support fluent reading.
Craft or convention problems repeatedly distract or flatten the narrative.
Revision & Commentary
Meaningful revision is visible and commentary accurately explains craft effects.
Revision is mostly cosmetic or commentary names devices without explaining effects.
Unit 03 Reflection
Compare your Week 7 scene to this final story. Name one thing you now understand about narrative craft that you did not understand before, cite evidence from your own writing, and set one narrative goal to carry into future analytical and creative work.
My Original Narrative Portfolio
The story and reflection belong to the learner. Keep the original complete 900–1,400-word draft separate from the final revision. This form does not generate prose or assign grades.
Draft 1 not preserved yet.
Six Meaningful Craft Annotations
At least six concrete decisions, with the location or quotation, the craft choice, and a reasoned explanation of its effect. They need not be six different devices.

Five-Criterion Local Educator Review
Evaluate the full portfolio using the original ten-point rubric: 0–2 per criterion and **8/10** for mastery. A lower result needs targeted correction and resubmission.
