Unit 09 · Sustained Fiction & Literary Inquiry · Week 25

Launching a Sustained Fiction Study

How can readers maintain attention, questions, and evidence across a connected connected fiction text?

Five complete lessons combining a verified complete core text, shared calibration text, printable evidence workspaces, and evaluator-reviewed mastery.

Weekly targets

Read, retrieve, interpret and defend

  • Use accurately: section, locator, pacing, annotation, inference, prediction, morphology, reading record.
  • Support reasoning with evidence distributed across the complete text.
  • Complete Reading plan, opening analysis, and checkpoint conference.
  • Revise after evaluator feedback.

Full novel study and shared calibration

The Lamp Room is a short local calibration cycle, not a full novel. A complete teacher-approved novel remains required for the original novel-study outcome. Agree on a lawful, accessible edition with the evaluator; record title, author, edition and stable chapter/page or audio locators. Do not award full novel-study credit for the short packet alone.

Week 25: begin the complete novel and establish a realistic reading plan. Week 26: track choices, motifs and themes across the middle reading. Week 27: finish the complete novel, synthesize evidence from beginning, middle and end, and submit the 1,200–1,500-word analysis and independent reading conference. Adjust the reading schedule with the evaluator rather than substituting summaries.

If access is not yet ready, start the local calibration tasks while the evaluator arranges the text; record the novel requirement as pending.

Reading list and edition planning

Required local core text

The Lamp Room · complete six-section fiction cycle

The complete course-created text is included inside English 9. It provides one stable edition and section/paragraph locators, so every learner can practice the shared close-reading methods without an outside account or network connection.

Reading rule: Read the assigned sections in the complete text. A summary or generated reconstruction cannot replace reading. ARSHIF reading hubs may support optional comparison and independent reading but are not required for mastery.

Shared skill calibration

Practice the method before applying it independently

Required reading · Sections 1–2

Read “The Extra Chimney” and “What Dust Records” in the complete local core text. Record evidence using section and paragraph locators such as §2 ¶4.

Day 121 · Required lesson

Verify access and edition

Establish the exact text, format, and locator system.

Direct instruction and model

Different editions and translations may divide or word a sustained fiction cycle differently. Citation requires a stable locator: page plus chapter, chapter plus section, or audio time plus chapter.

Core-text evidence

Complete the access preflight. Compare two possible locator systems and explain which will let another reader find your evidence.

Day 122 · Required lesson

Map the reading load

Create a realistic schedule from verified length and available days.

Direct instruction and model

Divide total pages, chapters, or audio minutes across six reading-and-analysis sessions, reserving three sessions for synthesis and revision. Build recovery space rather than assuming identical daily speed.

Core-text evidence

Record total length, six session targets, checkpoint dates, and a recovery plan. The evaluator verifies feasibility.

Day 123 · Required lesson

Annotate for retrieval

Use a small code that makes evidence findable later.

Direct instruction and model

Tag turning point, question, pattern, character choice, setting pressure, unfamiliar word, and possible theme. Every note includes a locator and a brief reason—not highlighting alone.

Core-text evidence

Annotate the calibration passage, then record five core-text annotations from the opening section with locators and reasons.

Day 124 · Required lesson

Learn vocabulary in context

Combine context, morphology, reference checking, and sentence testing.

Direct instruction and model

A plausible guess is provisional. Separate prefix, base or root, and suffix; test the meaning in context; verify when needed; then reread the sentence.

Core-text evidence

Choose five consequential core-text words. Record context, word parts where useful, provisional meaning, verified meaning, and effect on the passage.

Day 125 · Required lesson

Opening checkpoint conference

Demonstrate reading through evidence rather than page claims.

Direct instruction and model

A conference tests orientation, comprehension, questions, evidence retrieval, and a next-step plan. Accessible spoken, typed, signed, or supported modes use the same intellectual standard.

Core-text evidence

Present the text and edition, locate three passages promptly, explain one developing question, correct one initial inference, and set the next reading target.

Weekly mastery assessment

Reading plan, opening analysis, and checkpoint conference

Submit the named product, five daily responses, reading record, revision evidence, and reflection. Reading volume alone and completion controls do not establish mastery.

Criterion2 · Secure1 · Developing0 · Insufficient
Whole-text knowledge and retrievalSpecific, accurate and completePartly demonstrated; revision requiredMissing, unsupported or inaccurate
Interpretive claim and precisionSpecific, accurate and completePartly demonstrated; revision requiredMissing, unsupported or inaccurate
Textual evidence and citationSpecific, accurate and completePartly demonstrated; revision requiredMissing, unsupported or inaccurate
Reasoning, counterevidence and lens controlSpecific, accurate and completePartly demonstrated; revision requiredMissing, unsupported or inaccurate
Organization, revision and reflectionSpecific, accurate and completePartly demonstrated; revision requiredMissing, unsupported or inaccurate

Mastery: 8/10 after evaluator review. Below 8/10, revise the lowest criterion and resubmit. The conference may be spoken, typed, signed, or supported without lowering intellectual expectations.
