Investigation Planning with a Safe Simulated Dataset

Plan a repeatable investigation, identify sources of uncertainty, and document a justified revision.

Safety and evidence boundary

Use the course safety charter. This instructional studio uses supplied or invented numerical examples, paper tasks, and simulations. Do not culture microorganisms or substitute unsupervised laboratory materials. Model data are not experimental findings.

Explicit science instruction

A reproducible investigation states the question, variables, measurement method, data source, and criteria for evaluating a claim. This classroom version uses a simulated dataset rather than growing or culturing organisms. Two hypothetical observers independently read the same measurement chart. If their values differ, an operational definition—exactly what is measured and how—should be revised before drawing conclusions. The limitation should appear next to the result, not be hidden at the end.

Vocabulary: protocol; operational definition; replicate; uncertainty; revision.

Worked example with reasoning

Example protocol: (1) take a printed grid showing three leaf silhouettes; (2) define length as the straight line from marked base to marked tip; (3) measure each image twice in millimeters; (4) record both measurements rather than overwriting disagreements; (5) compare repeated readings and note any difference beyond one grid division. A valid revision might add clear endpoint markers. These steps are a paper exercise, not a biological experiment.

Guided question

In the above protocol, which choice defines the measurement operationally? What would make a peer's attempt comparable to yours?

Independent work

  1. Draft a four-column record: figure ID, trial 1 (mm), trial 2 (mm), and discrepancy (mm).
  2. Describe a source of systematic error and how to reduce it without changing the biological question.
  3. Write a two-sentence limitation distinguishing a paper-model result from real-world plant behavior.

Misconception check

A neatly documented simulated investigation cannot establish an organism's actual growth response.

Formative understanding check

Why should an unexpected measurement be preserved rather than silently deleted?

Show the worked response

Keeping the original record permits inspection for recording errors, real variation, or protocol problems; changes must be documented.

Self-check only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.

Mentor evidence conference

Ask Archaemenes to review your variables, control, repeatability, safety boundary, and whether another student could reproduce the simulated procedure.

Archaemenes may question your reasoning and help you plan a correction, but does not determine mastery or provide protected assessment answers.

Teacher guidance

Use only paper measurements or pre-provided readings; no need to handle biological material. Focus on procedure clarity and accessible alternative formats.

Foundation: complete a variables-and-procedure planning frame. Core: design a reproducible safe simulated investigation with controls and repeated trials. Extended: compare two possible designs and defend which better isolates the question.

Preserve learning evidence

Record calculations, model revisions, CER writing, and a correction in the original thursday evidence field. The course's existing records and progression rules remain in control.
