Claim–Evidence–Reasoning and a Limitations Statement

Synthesize Week 01 evidence into a defensible scientific explanation with a correction plan.

Safety and evidence boundary

Use the course safety charter. This instructional studio uses supplied or invented numerical examples, paper tasks, and simulations. Do not culture microorganisms or substitute unsupervised laboratory materials. Model data are not experimental findings.

Explicit science instruction

Claim–Evidence–Reasoning (CER) separates what is asserted, which observations support it, and the principle connecting them. Use quantitative details rather than saying results “look better.” A limitation explains why broader claims could be premature. For Week 01, trustworthy evidence depends on safe methods, stated units, repeated measurements, comparable conditions, and transparent uncertainties. A correction is more valuable than unexamined certainty.

Vocabulary: claim; evidence; reasoning; uncertainty; correction.

Worked example with reasoning

Model claim: “A standardized measurement protocol makes our comparison more interpretable.” Evidence: the hypothetical observer groups reported means of 8.45 cm and 8.75 cm when using different practices; the protocol identified inconsistent ruler placement as a possibility. Reasoning: matching endpoints and instruments would reduce one avoidable source of difference. Limitation: the hypothetical numbers alone cannot prove ruler placement was the actual cause, and simulated chart measurements do not establish biological growth.

Guided question

Label each sentence above as claim, evidence, reasoning, or limitation. Which part still needs additional data before claiming an observed cause?

Independent work

  1. Write a CER response using at least two numerical values from Wednesday's simulated dataset.
  2. Add a counterclaim or alternative explanation for the group difference and an evidence-collection plan.
  3. Return to the Week 01 portfolio: identify one corrected misunderstanding and the method that improved your work.

Spiral retrieval bridge

Try these from memory before reopening earlier lessons. Then check your reasoning and record one correction if needed.

  1. Without notes, define independent variable, dependent variable, control, and uncertainty.
  2. Calculate the mean of 8, 10, and 12 and the range.
  3. Explain why precision does not guarantee accuracy.
  4. Name one habit that makes a scientific record reproducible.

Retrieval is formative. The goal is durable connection across units, not a separate grade.

Misconception check

A scientific conclusion should not turn a model, numerical association, or anecdote into an unsupported causal law.

Formative understanding check

Does a claim become stronger when the evidence statement includes units and exactly which observations were compared?

Show the worked response

Usually yes: explicit measurements make the claim more auditable, but they still must be relevant and accurately interpreted.

Self-check only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.

Mentor evidence conference

Ask Archaemenes to challenge the link between your claim and evidence, identify an unsupported inference, and test whether your limitation and counterclaim are meaningful.

Archaemenes may question your reasoning and help you plan a correction, but does not determine mastery or provide protected assessment answers.

Teacher guidance

Evaluate clarity of claim, sufficiency of evidence, reasoning, and treatment of uncertainty. The companion's check is not an official weekly mastery score.

Foundation: use a CER organizer to separate claim, evidence, and reasoning. Core: write a complete CER with numerical evidence and a limitation. Extended: add a plausible counterclaim, a discriminating next test, and a transfer example.

Preserve learning evidence

Record calculations, model revisions, CER writing, and a correction in the original friday evidence field. The course's existing records and progression rules remain in control.
