KHAEMENES ACADEMY · BIOLOGY 10 · WEEK 35 · DAY 04

Prototype, Test & Revision

Treat a prototype or model as a testable representation, record failure honestly, and revise from evidence.

Safety, ethics and evidence boundary

Capstone work must remain low-risk and teacher/parent approved. No human-subject research, personal health/genetic data, biological culturing, animal manipulation, hazardous chemicals, mains electricity, weapons, or procedural gene editing. Public sources must be cited; private or sensitive locations/data must not be exposed.

Explicit science instruction

A biology capstone prototype may be a physical low-risk model, decision tool, habitat plan, informational interface, simulation or workflow. Testing should link directly to criteria. A failed test is useful evidence when documented.

Revision should respond to measured weakness, not simply decorate the original design.

Worked example with reasoning

A pollinator-plan prototype scores high on floral continuity but exceeds budget. The revision substitutes lower-cost native species while preserving bloom coverage. The student recalculates both criteria rather than declaring success.

Guided question

How can a prototype fail productively?

Independent work

  1. Test at least three criteria.
  2. Record raw results and failures.
  3. Revise one feature from evidence.
  4. Retest the changed criterion.
  5. Document any tradeoff created.

Misconception check

Iteration is not repeating the same design until a desired result appears; revision must be traceable to evidence.

Formative understanding check

What should be preserved before revising a prototype?

Worked response

The original design, test method, raw results and reason for revision.

Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.

Mentor evidence conference

Ask Archaemenes to challenge the evidence, stakeholder assumptions, quantitative model, tradeoffs, and revision criteria.

Open Archaemenes

Teacher guidance

Foundation: use a criteria test checklist. Core: perform one evidence-driven revision. Extended: compare competing prototypes and quantify tradeoffs.

Preserve learning evidence

Keep data, design choices, corrections, stakeholder reasoning, and uncertainty in the matching Week 35 evidence field.
