Safety, ethics and evidence boundary
Capstone work must remain low-risk and teacher/parent approved. No human-subject research, personal health/genetic data, biological culturing, animal manipulation, hazardous chemicals, mains electricity, weapons, or procedural gene editing. Public sources must be cited; private or sensitive locations/data must not be exposed.
Explicit science instruction
A strong capstone defense answers five questions: What problem was addressed? What evidence supports the model? How was performance measured? What tradeoffs and ethical issues remain? What would cause revision?
The final recommendation should distinguish measured results from projections and avoid claiming universal success from one prototype.
Worked example with reasoning
A conservation capstone improves modeled connectivity 30% at moderate cost but affects access for one stakeholder group. The defense recommends the design only with a co-designed access modification and monitoring trigger. That is stronger than hiding the tradeoff.
Guided question
What makes a recommendation scientifically responsible rather than merely persuasive?
Independent work
- Prepare a 5-part defense.
- Use at least three evidence types.
- Show one quantitative model.
- State two uncertainties and one ethical tradeoff.
- Define a revision trigger and next test.
Spiral retrieval bridge
Try these from memory before reopening earlier lessons. Then check your reasoning and record one correction if needed.
- Choose one molecular concept from Weeks 23–26 and trace one consequence upward to a population or ecosystem scale.
- Choose one quantitative tool from genetics/evolution and one from ecology; state when each is appropriate and one assumption.
- From Week 26: name one privacy/consent principle that should carry into any biological design project.
- From Weeks 27–34: give one example where evidence changed or constrained a biological explanation rather than merely supporting an initial idea.
Retrieval is formative. The goal is durable connection across units, not a separate grade.
Misconception check
A confident presentation is not stronger than transparent uncertainty. Scientific credibility increases when limitations and revision conditions are explicit.
Formative understanding check
What should a capstone recommendation include besides the preferred option?
Worked response
Evidence, criteria, constraints, uncertainty, tradeoffs, ethical considerations and conditions for revision.
Open-book formative practice only; not an official mastery attempt or grade.
Mentor evidence conference
Ask Archaemenes to challenge the evidence, stakeholder assumptions, quantitative model, tradeoffs, and revision criteria.
Open ArchaemenesTeacher guidance
Foundation: use a defense outline. Core: defend evidence and revision criteria. Extended: conduct a stakeholder challenge and sensitivity defense.
Preserve learning evidence
Keep data, design choices, corrections, stakeholder reasoning, and uncertainty in the matching Week 35 evidence field.
