Unit 06 · Rhetoric & Public Voice · Week 18

Speech Writing and Delivery

How does a writer compose language meant to be heard once?

A complete five-day rhetoric sequence with local source material, explicit reasoning instruction, handwriting or typing, and evaluator-reviewed mastery.

Weekly targets

Analyze, create and defend

  • Use accurately: oral style, cadence, parallelism, repetition, signpost, emphasis, pause, delivery.
  • Answer the essential question using precise evidence and reasoning.
  • Complete Three-to-five-minute speech, annotated script and accessible delivery plan.
  • Revise after feedback while preserving the 80% standard.

COURSE SPEECH SEED
A school tool should not merely be impressive when demonstrated. It should remain understandable when the network is unavailable, usable when a learner needs more time, and honest about what it records. Reliability is not decoration. Accessibility is not an afterthought. Privacy is not a promise hidden at the bottom of a page. These are conditions of trust.

This original instructional source may be printed, annotated, quoted and adapted for course work.

Day 86

Write for the Ear

Recognize differences between readable prose and listenable speech.

Learn and model

Mark the speech seed for breath groups, signposts, sentence length and information density. Read it aloud once and record where meaning is lost.

Independent evidence

Revise one dense paragraph for one-hearing comprehension.

Student response · handwriting or typing

Day 87

Pattern With Purpose

Use parallelism and repetition to organize meaning rather than imitate importance.

Learn and model

Analyze the repeated “is not” structure. Test a version with random repetition and explain why pattern must carry a real relationship.

Independent evidence

Create one three-part parallel sequence and justify its order.

Student response · handwriting or typing

Day 88

Evidence in Oral Form

Integrate evidence so a listener can identify source, number, meaning and limitation.

Learn and model

Transform a small local data table into two spoken sentences. State the comparison base and avoid reading a citation string aloud.

Independent evidence

Write and annotate a 90-second evidence section.

Student response · handwriting or typing

Day 89

Delivery Is Interpretation

Plan pace, pause, emphasis, gesture or an approved accessible equivalent.

Learn and model

Rehearse three times, changing one variable per trial. Record which choice clarified meaning and which exaggerated it.

Independent evidence

Complete an annotated script and rehearsal log.

Student response · handwriting or typing

Day 90

Unit 6 Demonstration

Deliver and defend an ethical, evidence-based speech.

Learn and model

Present live, recorded, through AAC or another approved mode. The same standards apply to organization, evidence, reasoning and audience awareness. Answer two evidence questions.

Independent evidence

Submit the speech, script, rehearsal log, source note and reflection.

Student response · handwriting or typing

Weekly mastery assessment

Three-to-five-minute speech, annotated script and accessible delivery plan

Submit the principal product, five daily responses, source annotations and a 150–250 word reflection. Completion or delivery alone does not establish mastery.

Mastery: 8/10 after evaluator review. Below mastery, revise the lowest criterion and resubmit. Accessible speech modes are evaluated by the same intellectual criteria, never by volume, eye contact or physical performance.
