Estate, Legacy & Elder Care

A connected, privacy-respecting guide for family preparedness, advance care planning, financial inventories, insurance literacy, and legal research.

← Firmament Legal Portal

Educational planning, not legal or medical advice. A living will or advance directive concerns medical treatment preferences; a last will and testament concerns property after death. Powers of attorney, guardianship, trusts, beneficiary designations, and probate may have separate requirements. These tools do not create legally valid instruments by themselves. Check current law and official forms in the relevant jurisdiction and consult qualified professionals.

Preparedness checklist

  1. Identify the jurisdiction whose law applies, and confirm current official requirements.
  2. List assets and liabilities without including account passwords, recovery phrases, or other secrets.
  3. Check ownership, insurance and retirement beneficiary designations; these may operate outside a will.
  4. Discuss health-care wishes and decision-makers with family and appropriate clinicians.
  5. Review potential executor, guardian, health-care surrogate and power-of-attorney appointments with qualified counsel.
  6. Complete and execute any legally required forms under applicable law; a planning worksheet is not a substitute.
  7. Store originals securely and tell trusted people how to locate them, without publicly exposing sensitive information.
  8. Revisit documents after major family, health, property, or jurisdiction changes.
