A claim needs an explicit purpose
A strong claim identifies the device's intended useful output and states that energy input must be fully accounted for across useful, thermal, other and storage pathways. Design recommendations should refer to quantified constraints, not simply the highest efficiency number.
Pair energy accounting with engineering evidence
Use the 500 J, 60% useful, 25% thermal, 5 s case: useful output 300 J, thermal transfer 125 J, other transfer 75 J and useful power 60 W. For a competing case, use 500 J at 70% useful and 30% thermal in 5 s: useful rises to 350 J but thermal transfer becomes 150 J and fails the stated 140 J thermal constraint.
Respond to objections
Counterclaim: energy that does not become useful output has vanished. The complete ledger demonstrates where it goes in our model. Counterclaim: a higher useful efficiency guarantees that all constraints are met. One improvement can fail a different criterion. Counterclaim: this digital output describes actual product performance. Every datum is a hypothetical calculation.
Close with a revision and assessment plan
Present an improved diagram, a comparison table, two correct calculations, one evidence-based limitation, and one meaningful next test. Friday's ten randomized open-book questions are public formative checks; actual supervised midterm/final assessments and official scores belong to a separate educator-controlled process.
